12186. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN EL SALVADOR. This investigation traces El Salvador's economic development from independence to the present, considering five distinct phases of El Salvador's economic history: 1) the colonial and early independence reliance on traditional agriculture and indigo trade; 2) the 100-year dependence on coffee exports, beginning in the 19th century; 3) the pursuit of a policy of import substitution industrialization (ISI) beginning in the mid-20th century; 4) the war economy of the 1980's; and 5) the shift to new economic policies focusing on non-traditional exports beginning in about 1989. Considers how El Salvador's past economic history can inform current efforts at economic policy-making in the post-war period. 14 pages, 46 footnotes, 19 bibliographic sources.
