12085. ISLAMIC DEMOCRACY. This paper examines the proposition that there are several principles or institutions built into the traditions of Islam that provide a basis for an Islamic form of democracy. Considers the ideas of Islamic poet and philosopher, Muhammad Iqbal, his son, Javid, and Muslim Brotherhood founder Hassan al-Turabi who all argued that democratic principles could be found in the Islamic principle of tawhid, the emphasis on the consensus (ijma) of the community, and in the way that the caliphs (leaders) were chosen in the early years of the faith. Draws on the work of other Islamic and Western scholars to compare and contrast the Islamic ideas of democracy with those of Western-style liberal democracy. Keywords: Islamic doctrine democratic principles comparative political philosophy. 11 pages, 32 footnotes, 8 bibliographic sources.   $77
