The first part of the paper takes a theoretical focus, considering the definitions and central characteristics of the learning organization; differentiating between organizational learning and the learning organization; considering the implications of being a learning organization for corporate culture, organizational structure, strategy, and environmental outlook, examining the factors in the external environment which encourage or demand the development of learning organizations; and previewing theoretical approaches towards becoming learning organizations. the concluding section of the paper examines the learning organization in action.
