12176. SELF-DETERMINATION AND INTERNATIONAL LAW. The purpose of this paper is to examine critically the various aspects of self-determination under international law. The analysis begins with an historical overview of the development of the concept of self-determination and its place in the context of international law. The investigation then examines contemporary aspects of self-determination dating from the UN resolutions on self-determination made in the early 1960s. Included is an assessment of the status of self-determination as a "right" under international law and consideration of the legal and political problems entailed within the broadbased pursuit of self-determination. 15 pages, 43 footnotes, 7 bibliographic sources.
