This paper provides an overview and analysis of the current economic and political environment in South Korea, with an emphasis on assessing the risks and opportunities for foreign investors. The economic risk assessment profiles of the basic structure and features of the South Korean economy, discusses the historical attitude towards foreign investment and recent new foreign investments, and provides an analysis of South Korea's recent economic meltdown, including a profile of the IMF package and the planned economic reforms and a discussion of current economic conditions. Part II, which focuses on a political risk assessment, overviews South Korea's basic political structure and history, and appraises the current political climate in terms of both domestic and international relations. This part also includes a discussion of the politics of South Korean xenophobia and its implications for foreign investors.
