This term paper traces the history and course of Arab nationalism, also known as pan-Arabism, from the 1948 establishment of the state of Israeli through the 1967 Six Day War and its aftermath. Following a definition and history of the concept of Arab nationalism, the analysis looks at the principal actors (e.g., Nasser) and major events (e.g., 1948 Arab-Israeli war, 1952 Egyptian revolution and rise of Nasserism, 1956 Suez crisis, 1958 Egyptian-Syrian federation, Syria’s exit from the UAR in 1961, 1963 Baathist coup in Iraq, 1967 War) defining Arab nationalism during this period with a focus on the factors which so persistently frustrated the achievement of its objectives.
