13113. CHINESE ECONOMIC REFORM AND DEVELOPMENT. This report provides an overview and analysis of the economic and political-economic reforms in the Post-Mao era and considers the prospects for continued economic reform in the late 1990s and early 21st century. The analysis begins with a general overview and evaluation of the post-Mao economic reforms. Another sector provides a close look at the centerpiece of China's initial economic reform -- the agricultural sector -- considering both the contribution that this sector made to China's overall economic development and the reasons for the lagging productivity in this sector after 1985. Following a critical evaluation of the impact of reforms during the Deng era, a concluding section considers barriers to future economic reform. 22 pages, 69 footnotes, 25 bibliographic sources.
