| 13283. THE CHANGING ROLE OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA. This paper examines the changing role of the Catholic Church in Latin America. The analysis considers how political, social and economic forces shaped the destiny of the Church over the past five centuries. Although the discussion is structured in chronological order (i.e., moving from the late 15th Century to the present era), the presentation is not that of a history but rather that of a representative interpretation based on an analysis of five monographs (Lery's History of the Voyage to the Land of Brazil, Burkholder's Politics of a Colonial Career, Hamnett's Juarez, Beezley's Judas at the Jockey Club, and Fraser's Evita) focusing on some of the key people and events shaping Latin American history. A concluding section summarizes the transformations in the role of the Church in Latin America during the past five centuries.
