14057. BREAKING UP MICROSOFT: ECONOMIC IMPACT. Focusing most closely on the likely economic impact of the Microsoft antitrust case, this term paper provides an prospective overview and analysis of the impact of the expected break-up of Microsoft on the market power of the company itself and industry competitors, the market and innovators for operating systems, the industry, and the consumer. The first section examines the immediate impact on Microsoft, looking closely at changes in the company’s short- and long- term strategies. The next section examines the impact on competitors- looking both at the effect on smaller competitors and innovative start-up firms and the potential impact of the case on other large IT companies (notably, Intel and Cisco Systems) who may be vulnerable to similar charges of anti-trust violations. The next section looks more generally at the likely economic impact of the case, including the effect on consumers, competitors, and future antitrust policy.
