Using Randy Shilts' (1987) And The Band Played On as the primary source, this paper examines the early years of the AIDS epidemic as a disaster affecting the gay community within the broader context of collective stress situations, as depicted in Barton's (1969) Communities in Disaster. The impact and responses of the AIDS disaster is compared with three other disasters in Barton's (1969) book: the 1952 Arkansas tornado, the Irish Famine, and the bombing of Hiroshima.
