15592. THE UNDERSTANDING OF FEMALENESS IN THE WAVES (WOOLF) AND ULYSSES (JOYCE). Woolf depicts three main female characters and thus shows three different ways of being "female" (with both good and bad qualities). Joyce's emphasis is on the contradictory and ambiguous nature of femaleness. He captures this idea in the free-flowing inner dialogue of Molly Bloom; however, it is argued that there are also overtones in this dialogue which can be attributed to Joyce's status as a male "outsider." 6 pages, 15 footnotes, 2 bibliographic sources.
