This paper describes and discusses the meaning and function of slang, and then analyzes its use, derivation, and function in standard American English. Many specific examples are provided. Includes a brief overview of Irving Lewis Allen’s widely accepted social theory of slang. Concludes that while slang terms are generally to be avoided in formal communications, they have a place in American English usage because they enhance the vocabulary and they increase the opportunities for creativity and expression.
