| 17357. AMERICAN ENGLISH SLANG. This paper describes and discusses the meaning and function of slang, and then analyzes its use, derivation, and function in standard American English. Many specific examples are provided. Includes a brief overview of Irving Lewis Allen’s widely accepted social theory of slang. Concludes that while slang terms are generally to be avoided in formal communications, they have a place in American English usage because they enhance the vocabulary and they increase the opportunities for creativity and expression.
