17356. CRISIS IN ZIMBABWE. This paper provides an overview and analysis of current events (as contained in recent newspaper articles) in Zimbabwe, within the context of that country’s historical background as a colonized region. It is hypothesized that the legacy of British imperial rule is related to the nation’s current problems. In particular, the current dilemma in agricultural production is related to the fact that imperial rule left most of the country’s farmlands in the hands of a tiny minority of white settlers. Concludes that the greatest domestic problem faced by Zimbabwe today is that of the starvation of most of its people – a problem clearly related to the government’s recent program of seizing land. In turn, the land-seizure program can be seen as a reaction to the imperial period, when a minority of white settlers took over the land for their own gain. Overall, the hypothesis that many of the current problems in Zimbabwe are related to the nation’s legacy of imperial rule under the British is confirmed.
