17462. ELI LILLY, 1998 (A): STRATEGIC CHALLENGES HARVARD CASE STUDY 399173. This paper provides a Berkeley Research 14-point action research model case analysis and case solution to a Harvard Business School case study (399173) by Michael Y. Yoshino and Thomas W. Malnight which focuses on pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly’s strategic challenges in 1998. Although Lilly has grown over the previous decade and although it has a strong leadership position in the neurosciences with its Prozac and Zyprexa products, the company faces numerous market challenges related to changing demographics, intensifying competition, industry consolidation, regulatory pressures and healthcare industry cost constraints. It is recommended that Lilly diversify its product portfolio, cautiously begin acquiring small firms, and work to change its organizational culture to encourage flexibility and organization-wide learning.
