This paper profiles the heroes in the works of Ernest Hemingway, arguing that, in contrast to some claims that Hemingway’s leading male characters are meant to depict the author’s perception of the macho ideal, Hemingway’s heroes are flawed men who persevere in the face of failure and tragedy. Hemingway’s heroes are examined through an analysis of themes and leading male characters in five works: A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, In Our Time, The Old Man and the Sea, and The Sun Also Rises.
