17453. SUCCESS FACTORS IN FRANCHISING. Addressing those who are considering purchasing a franchise as well as the novice franchisee who has recently gone into franchising, this paper presents an overview and analysis of the key factors in franchising success. Critical success factors for franchisees include: 1) selection of a viable concept; 2) franchisee’s affinity for the concept; 3) selection of an optimum location; 4) thorough research of the concept and market prior to franchise purchase; 5) practicing hands-on management; 6) willingness to work long hours; 7) willingness to follow the franchiser’s program; 8) successful marketing program; 9) hiring and retaining good employees; and 10) staying power. A concluding section briefly explores some of the hottest franchise opportunities, including Curves, the world’s leading fitness center, and iSold It, the leading concept in the emerging eBay drop-off store category.
