This paper examines the ways that Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice serves as a commentary on the business aspects of marriage in England during the Romantic period. In her novel, Austin makes a satirical comment on the upper class’s emphasis on the importance of income and status in marriage arrangements by using the language of business and negotiation in her treatment of the marriage theme.
