This term paper discusses the evidence showing that African American children, particularly from poor families, tend to score lower on cognitive tests and experience more difficulties in academic achievement. It is argued that certain elements of culture and parenting may contribute to the problem. However, it is also argued that the problem of lower achievement levels among African American children can be alleviated through interventions that encourage increased participation of the parents in their children’s schooling.
