Search by topic:   18522. AMERICAN ATTITUDES TOWARD THE CHINESE. This paper argues that American attitudes toward the Chinese have been influenced by stereotypical dualistic thinking and the perception of the Chinese people as an opposite “Other.” This argument is supported by reference to the theoretical views of Edward Said and Richard Madsen, the views of American writers such as Eva Jane Price, Bret Harte and Pearl Buck, a 2007 opinion poll, and Cold War perceptions of Communist China as an opposing force to American democracy. It is concluded that Americans need to focus more on their common humanity with the Chinese, rather than emphasizing conflicting traits.
