| 18682. CHINA’S ONE-CHILD POLICY. This paper discusses the economic impact of the one-child policy of China, which was implemented in 1979 to help curb population growth. It is argued that, because of the persistence of discrimination against female children, there has been an increase in “sex-selective abortions” in the nation. This has resulted in an imbalance between males and females, which has had negative social consequences (e.g., an increase in crime) as well as negative economic consequences (because women have been found to play an important role in economic development).
