18757. COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY. This paper critically reviews the development of the theory and practice of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The first wave of CBT involved a purely behavioral approach to the treatment of psychological problems. The second wave enhanced the behavioral approach by adding concepts pertaining to the role of cognition in mental health. The third wave is found in such specific approaches as schema therapy, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). It is argued that the inclusion of mindfulness and acceptance in third-wave CBT has improved the overall effectiveness and practicality of the therapy.
