18545. HONG KONG’S RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT. This paper examines Hong Kong’s unique position in China as a prosperous trade center and a former British colony. The paper focuses on the handover back to China in 1997, and the fears that people had about the potential impact on the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong’s citizens and on the city’s economic status. Because of various factors, the situation has not been as bad as many analysts predicted; nonetheless, the future of Hong Kong’s relationship with China remains uncertain.
