| 18227. INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS AND COMMUNITY COHESION IN THE IDEAL STATE. This paper considers the views of various political philosophers (Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Marx, Locke, Rousseau, Kant, J.S. Mill, Bastiat, and Dewey) on the proper balance between individual freedom and the rights of society as a whole. It is concluded that a “social contract” needs to include laws that protect citizens while simultaneously guaranteeing equal justice to all.
