| 18017. MASCULINITY IN SHAKESPEARE'S TWELFTH NIGHT. This paper discusses what Shakespeare's play says about what it means to be a "proper man." The male characters make various humorous efforts to prove their masculinity (with aggression, coarseness, the pursuit of women, and the avoidance of cowardice). The play also expresses ideas about homophobia, male bonding, and life in a male-dominated society. It is also noted that the female character Viola, in disguise, is easily able to pass herself off as a young man. In this way, Shakespeare expresses the idea that gender identities are "fluid."
