18044. “MATERIAL CONCERNS” BY TIM JACKSON. This paper reviews Jackson's book on how to protect the environment without undermining the existing economic system. Jackson's proposed solutions include the use of "preventive environmental management" and a shift to a "service economy." The book also addresses the extreme challenges that will need to be faced in making the proposed changes. Yet, such changes are necessary because of the threat of industrial pollution to life on the planet. It is argued that Jackson's book makes an important contribution because it encourages dialogue on the issue and it provides insights into the material and psychological changes that will need to be made.
