| 18750. MIRACLES OF THE ANGLO-SAXON SAINTS. This paper is concerned with the stories of miracles among the Christian saints of Anglo-Saxon England, including St. Cuthbert, St. Edmund, and St. John of Beverly. It is argued that various factors must be considered in explaining the reasons for the stories’ popularity, including the prevailing worldview of the time, the revenue and prestige associated with saints’ shrines, and political developments. Above all, the stories were regarded as important because they provided lessons about the ideals of Christian life. TAGS: religion Christianity saints Anglo-Saxon England saint Cuthbert St Edmund.
