| 18551. NURSING CASE STUDY: ATTEMPTED SUICIDE IN A FEMALE CANCER PATIENT. This paper is concerned with an ethical dilemma faced by a nurse psychiatrist: whether to place a cancer patient, whose condition is worsening, on involuntary hold because of her proclaimed intention to attempt to commit suicide. The paper includes a literature review, analysis, personal position, and consideration of the implications for nursing practice. Based on the theoretical framework of virtue ethics, it is concluded that the patient should be consoled and counseled, but not held involuntarily, because she is rational and her decision is supported by significant others.
