| 18668. THE MARSHALL PLAN. This paper discusses the conditions at the end of World War II and the start of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. In response to the effort of the Soviet Union to expand its influence in Europe, U.S. Secretary of State George C. Marshall proposed an economic recovery plan. According to the plan, the U.S. would provide aid to help revive the economies of Western Europe, thereby building alliances with the nations there. The Marshall Plan was successful in achieving this objective, although it also contributed to increasing tensions between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.
