| 18567. THE NURSING SHORTAGE. This paper provides an overview and analysis the extent of the nursing shortage, its various causes, and some of the recommendations that have been made for solving the problem with the use of HRM strategies. Following an overview of the nursing shortage, including specific figures on current and projected shortages, the analysis looks at the major underlying causes of the shortage including the aging of the population, training shortfalls, and a negative image of the nursing profession. The next section of the paper presents human resources management strategies to address the problem, including an expansion of educational routes into nursing, empowerment of nurses, improving work conditions, increasing pay, and improving communications.
