As discussed in this paper, the pharaohs played a vital role in ancient Egyptian civilization because they were regarded as semi-divine intermediaries between the people and the gods. Based on the Egyptian belief in an afterlife, efforts were made to be sure that the pharaohs joined the gods after they died. This led to the development of funerary cults and also had an impact on the design of tombs (i.e., pyramid tombs became increasingly large and impressive). KEYWORDS: Egypt pharaohs religion pyramids.
