| 18520. THE TREATMENT OF GENDER IN A PRIME-TIME TV PROGRAM. This paper refers to the views of theorists such as Jean Kilbourne and Sut Jhally on the negative impact that stereotyped media depictions have on young female viewers. Then, the paper analyzes the treatment of gender in a fall 2007 episode from the series Life, a prime-time TV drama directed at a young adult market. The analysis looks at the gender of the show’s creators, diversity among the characters, the depiction of gender roles, and examples of reversals in gender roles. Using the episode as an illustrative example, it is argued that although gender depictions have improved since the 1990s, still more needs to be done in order for women to receive full equal treatment in comparison to men.
