| 18334. VOCATIONAL EDUCATION. Vocational education (also known as CTE, or Career and Technical Education) arose in the U.S. in the late 19th Century in response to needs for a skilled workforce. It is noted that vocational education today is concerned more with the development of technical skills than manual labor skills. The paper covers the development of vocational education in the U.S., including the negative impact of the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act. It is argued that vocational education should continue to receive federal funding, despite the recent emphasis on academic standards, because it still plays an important role in education and the national economy.
