A review of the book by Robert Averitt which argues that the American economy is characterized by a division into `center' and `periphery' firms - with the former becoming increasingly dominant. The book argues that `big is good', and that enlightened private and governmen( policies can overcome the problems of instability, unemployment and inflation.
