09242. SIX RECORDS OF A FLOATING LIFE (SHEN FU) AND SIX CHAPTERS FROM MY LIFE ‘DOWNUNDER’ (YANG JIANG). This essay compares and contrasts two Chinese works, one from the early 19th century (Six Records ofa Floating Life) and one from the period of the Cultural Revolution under Mao in the 1960s (Six Chapters from my Life Downunder). Jiang’s “Life Downunder” was modeled on the earlier work by Shen Fu. Comparing the two works reveals many changes over the time period in Chinese society, politics and economics.
