This paper provides an analysis of a Richard Ivey School of Business case study (9B01E019) concerning a suspected security vulnerability in Microsoft’s Internet Information Server (IIS) software. Following an executive summary of the case study, the paper identifies key stakeholders and the major concerns of each stakeholder; analyzes the major concerns of the decision-maker in the case; develops an action plan with time-table for response; considers the ethical and practical issues in cooperating with a hacker to fix the problem; and discusses pros and cons of making source code public to expedite corrections of security vulnerabilities.
