This paper analyzes the aspect of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that deals with the problem of Internet users illegally downloading and sharing copyrighted music and movie files. The paper examines four specific cases (along with other general legal actions) that are relevant to this effort: 1) the pre-DMCA case of Sony Corp. v. Universal City Studios; 2) A&M Records v. Napster; 3) MGM v. Grokster; and 4) RIAA v. Verizon Internet Services. In addition, the paper discusses the RIAA’s strategy of targeting individual users, as well as the implications of the rulings that have been made in the various cases.
