17731. Strategic Audit: “Kmart Corporation: Seeking Survival in a Changing Marketplace (2002)”. Using a strategic audit format similar to that recommended by Wheelen & Hunger (2004), this paper presents an analysis and a solution to a business strategy case study of Kmart Corporation shortly after it entered bankruptcy protection in 2002. This research paper draws on background information from the business press as well as case study data to analyze Kmart’s situation in 2002. Following an appraisal of Kmart’s current situation (current performance, mission, objectives, strategy) and strategic managers (board of directors, top management), the paper analyzes the external environment (political-legal, economic, sociocultural, technological) (PEST), task environment (presenting a five forces analysis) and the internal environment (human resources, management, R&D, finances, operations, marketing, IT) and then presents a summary SWOT analysis and reappraisal of the company’s mission statement and objective. Three strategic alternatives are presented and assessed. The conclusion presents strategic recommendations with an implementation plan and consideration of evaluation and control.
