Search by topic:   17554. Summary of “Technology, Technique, and the Body” by Edward Tenner. This paper provides a summary and analysis of Tenner’s article which considers the Louis Mumford-Jacques Ellul debate over whether technique drives technological innovation or vice versa. Tenner argues that the users of technologies (as well as the inventors) play an important role in making the technologies what they are. According to Tenner, techniques change both objects and bodies, and, through the process of adopting devices, “we change our social selves.” Just as natural selection shapes the appearance of non-human animals, technology helps to shape the identity of human beings.
