17954. Sun Microsystems Case Study. This paper provides an analysis and case solution to a case study on Sun Microsystems. The case is drawn from Hitt, Ireland, & Hoskissons Strategic Management: Competitiveness and Globalization. In 1998 Sun Microsystems, the $9.7 billion fully integrated computer company, was locked in a competitive and legal battle over control of its JAVA programming language. The legal battle had Sun as a David with a vision of a networked future poised against the industry’s biggest Goliath – Microsoft and the Wintel monopoly. The analysis includes an environmental analysis; a Porters Five Forces analysis; a competitive analysis; an identification and analysis of Suns business level, corporate level and competitive strategies; an identification of Sunss core competencies (tangible and intangible resources, capabilities); a value chain analysis; a financial performance appraisal; and a SWOT analysis.
