17954. Sun Microsystems Case Study. This paper provides an analysis and case solution to a case study on Sun Microsystems. The case is drawn from Hitt, Ireland, & Hoskissons Strategic Management: Competitiveness and Globalization. In 1998 Sun Microsystems, the $9.7 billion fully integrated computer company, was locked in a competitive and legal battle over control of its JAVA programming language. The legal battle had Sun as a David with a vision of a networked future poised against the industry’s biggest Goliath – Microsoft and the Wintel monopoly.
