19701. Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Employment. New, Fall/Winter 2017-2018 This paper provides an overview and analysis of the growing ubiquity of robotics and artificial intelligence in everyday life and the implications for work and employment. The extent to which AI and robotics represent a threat to employment is analyzed. In addition to delivery drivers facing threats from self-driving cars, other at-risk careers include warehouse workers, telemarketers, tax preparers, insurance underwriters, and news writers. General estimates of projected job losses due to AI/robotics are offered. Women workers are seen as particularly vulnerable to increased automation. Proposed solutions to the impending employment disruptions caused by AI/robotics are discussed, with a special focus on universal basic income (UBI).
