19299. New Media and Evolution of Communication. Focusing especially on social networking media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube), this essay examines the expansion of interactivity and user participation in media creation, information dissemination, and the globalization of communication as well as considering the broader impact and importance of these new media communication forms on real world activities and relations. The essay includes an overview of new media and a discussion of theories of how social media disseminates information. The examination of the impact of new social media on private citizen participation in the public forum and in playing an active role in political and/or social activism suggests that the new social media have become important tools of political/social communication and information dissemination and political/social activism.
